Hello there,
Welcome to my monthly note edition for November 2024. This month, I accomplished a few notable things and realized the worth of time and getting things done at the right time. Here are a few moments from this month.
The first batch passed out from the Uki Weekend cohort: Online batch.
When I was joining Uki, I started an online cohort batch for full-stack web development. Around 40+ students enrolled and started in May. These 6 months of hard work & dedication have paved off. In the end, 10 students were able to finish the course fully. It’s always a good feeling to hear how they feel, and they messaged me with happiness and joy. That’s what I wanted, and a change from them is that they can learn and complete this. Two of the students were from non-IT, where they learned to program from this course and completed a fully functioning website.

Field Visit to Data centres in Sri Lanka through the university
As part of my MSc degree, we had a module called Computer Networks. To learn how the internet works & how it’s getting transmitted throughout the world through submarine cables underwater, to learn more about we made a visit to the SLT (Sri Lanka Telecom) Data centre & submarine landing cable at Matara. It was really amazing to see how the people are working to make sure the whole world is functioning smoothly without any internet and power failures. Tech is really awesome. Here is a small clip-on travelling to Kandy & then, from there, taking the arranged bus to the places we visited.
Finishing up a small level of WordPress migration
This is a small level of migration of a bunch of websites from one service provider to another, all of which are WordPress. Nothing was a challenge in terms of WordPress. However, I had a challenge when migrating emails along with sites. I had to have a lot of patience to check and verify that the emails were properly exported and imported to the new hosting provider. That was truly a hands-on task I did last month.
Cooking during weekends
During my weekends, except one weekend, I need to attend the online lectures via Zoom. During those days, if I had to stay in Kilinochchi, I needed to cook my own food during my mom’s absence. I am still developing when it comes to cooking. Each parent should also encourage their children to learn to cook from childhood so that the children can at least know how to cook their own meals instead of eating unhealthy things at outside shops. I love cooking, and it’s a never-ending journey.
Meeting a few people from the UK at Kilinochchi Ariviyal Nagar University
They all came to have a workshop on brushing the ideas and encouraging entrepreneurship in the Northern province. I was introduced to them through my volunteer work at TAJ & TILE, which are running based in the UK. I couldn’t take any pictures with them due to my introverted personality to ask for a photo. It was an interesting session and was able to learn how the business can be designed to make sure the end user getting the best out of it and at the same time business owners making profit.
Mechanic work for my bike
Since I came to Kilinochchi four months ago, my bike has been working without any issues. However, in the last few weeks, I have heard an annoying sound from the front wheel, so I went to the garage and had it fixed. It was an issue with the front wheel’s brake cable.
Learning from this month
Delayed submission
When it comes to my academic submissions and learning the MSc modules, I procrastinate a lot and feel too lazy to keep up the momentum that I should have to focus on learning. I need to prepare myself to make sure I am tracking my time effectively & make use of my spare time to learn and practise for my studies. I have a few more submissions and exams on the way. I am exploring and trying out a few things to overcome anxiety and feeling insecure when it comes to examinations. Let’s see what I am doing in the upcoming months.
Exercise on a regular basis
One notable and appreciable thing that I have done this month is staying consistent with exercising at least three days per week. After a few of my physical struggles, like constipation and swallowing things in my underarms, I started exercising as much as I could to keep everything under control. I am practising and looking forward to the best transformation in the upcoming months.
Should improve my teaching style
I am confident that I can teach programming at a certain level. But that one factor won’t really make me a good teacher or mentor. I need to understand who is studying, what type of mindset they have, and how I can encourage and motivate them. Again, I have learnt that I need to focus on managing people and maintaining professionalism in day-to-day life and activities.
Overall, this month, I realized my real issues and have planned a couple of ways to mitigate or improve on them. Let me explain those in the next month and see how it goes.
